  • There’s nothing quite like a fridge-emptying salad. All that cleansing is good for the soul. And when you’re like us—staring down a new journey of unknown destination—well, a little emptying is a good thing. We breathe out to make space for fresh air, empty the cabinets so we can fill them anew, expand our hearts in ways we hadn’t considered. Life keeps surprising me. As long as there’s good food and good company along the way, I think we’ll be fine, no matter where we end up. I hope the same is true for you.

Recipe modified by the picnic salad of @thefirstmess. Highly recommended!

  • It's an odd thing, to feel as if your body has other plans it isn't sharing with you. The first half of 2017 threw me for a loop, health wise, and I spent the second half recalibrating myself to find my equilibrium again. My avid-baker self suddenly went vegan. I wondered if it was enough. I wondered if it was too much. Mainly, I just wondered. Perhaps my body would do what it wanted anyway, without my input. (How rude.)

Changing my food choices on a daily basis made me hyper-aware of what I put in my body. Slowly, I came to accept that this was a partnership between me and Nature, that I had a say and the history of my genes had a say, and maybe the game wasn't fair in more ways than one, but this was the mission I'd been handed: Love myself, this hand and that arm, this thigh and that hip, this lung and that heart. No matter how broken or off-kilter they may become, trust that it was on its way to being Good again. They'll carry me as best they can, if I help them to, and in return, I'll take this hand and that arm and this skipping, off-kilter heart to the edge of the world, and watch the day rise anew.

B and I are currently brushing off all that stress in our favorite place, Ireland. We’ve been lucky enough to break bread with two sets of family while we’re here, proving again and again that the Irish are a beautifully welcoming people. This island feels so much like home. 🍀❤️

  • We're traveling soon, returning to a place that felt like home from our first breaths off the plane—cold and fresh, with that unmistakable scent of newness. Last time we visited, we stood in line for the bus and felt like locals. Sometimes a place is fun and new and interesting to explore, but it doesn’t pull at the invisible bands of your heart. It doesn’t whisper in your ear as you wait in the chilly morning for the bus, "Hello there. I’ve been waiting for you." Ah, but when it does ... 💓

Until departure day, we're soothing our wanderlust with a batch of these gems: Lemon-Ginger Cookies. Soft and chewy with the perfect citrusy pop from the glaze, they're just the balm we need as the last dregs of winter hold strong around us. Check out the blog for more musings and to snag the seriously easy recipe! (Link in profile.) Do you have a place that's felt like home from the moment you set foot in it? #Ireland will always be that place for us!

  • For me, so much of getting to know a city happens through its food. These lemon-drizzled ginger cookies were one of the earliest recipes I adopted when I moved to Birmingham, AL, and they’ve remained a mainstay in our house every winter. Chewy (my favorite!) with pops of brightness from the glaze, they’re pretty hard to beat. Coming to the blog just as soon as I grab time! •
